In adulthood, the priority for a Maine Coon shifts toward maintaining an ideal body weight through portion-controlled meals and a steady mix of interactive play sessions and quiet downtime suited to its moderate energy level. The long, shaggy double coat needs brushing two to three times a week to prevent mats, especially around the legs and belly. Pairing this with a yearly wellness exam and routine dental checks helps catch subtle changes early, even while the cat seems to be thriving.

In adult Maine Coon cats, it's worth staying alert for early signs such as lethargy, rapid or labored breathing, reduced appetite, or fainting spells or a bunny-hop gait, reluctance to jump, or stiffness after resting. These can be subtle at first, so raising them during an annual exam rather than waiting for them to worsen is a sensible approach given this breed's health background.
